The Cumberland River Band’s roots have run deep in Harlan County Kentucky hills for generations. Even with the band’s progressive sound, you can still hear the heritage of traditional bluegrass music in their songs.
The band actually began with a promise and hand shake between two friends while driving to a Saturday night jam session in 2009. Jamie Dean and Joey Jones made a deal with each other - Joey promised he would buy an upright bass if Jamie would agree to stick with it and put together a band. Early on, they decided they would have to write their own material to ensure their music would appeal to both the younger generation as well as the older, more traditional, bluegrass fans. Fans certainly agree they have achieved their goal.
In July 29, 2010, CRB was invited to perform for the writers and producers of the FX Network’s TV show, JUSTIFIED while they were in Harlan gathering information for their upcoming season. With only 24 hours notice, the band got together and wrote a song, “Justified” as a gift to the show. They received a standing ovation from the writers and producers, including Graham Yost a multi award winning writer and producer. The band added the song to their debut album, "ROCK ISLAND EXPRESS" released September 3, 2010.
In November 2010, CRB was notified their song would be featured in the second season of JUSTIFIED (Episode 204). It aired March 2, 2011. On April 6, 2011, the show included five original songs by the band.
Cumberland River is currently in the studio finalizing their upcoming 2011 album release. Acclaimed singer, songwriter and Grasstowne band member, STEVE GULLEY is producing this highly anticipated new album. On Monday, April 4, 2011, Rural Rhythm Records announce they would release this highly anticipated new album. The album will be collection of heart felt songs and haunting ballads written by the band and family members, taken from their life experiences and campfire stories from Harlan County, Kentucky.
