Highland founder, Oscar Wong, was born in Jamaica in 1940. At 18, he left Jamaica to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he completed his masters in Civil/Structural engineering. After retiring early from a successful engineering career that took him all over the country, Oscar landed in Asheville in 1994 and started Highland Brewing in the 3.500 square foot basement of Barley's Taproom. With the help of head brewer John Lyda, that original downtown location produced 6,500 barrels of beer annually using retro-fitted dairy equipment. In its new 35,000 square foot location in East Asheville, the company has grown to a staff of 17 and a capacity of 20,000 barrels per year. Highland has become Western Carolina's microbrewery of choice and adheres to a standard of excellence matched by few. Thanks for your support!! We are celebrating our 15th anniversary this year! Cheers.
